Evan Jay Rasmussen passed away this afternoon in Bellingham, WA.
He was my grandpa. I am only sad that I haven't been able to see him since I was married 2 1/2 years ago! Luckily, Dad flew up there last night when he found out grandpa might not make it through the night.
I just wanted to share a couple of memories I have of Grandpa Rasmussen.
Grandma and Grandpa lived in Vegas during my childhood. It seemed like every summer they would drive their motorhome up to SLC to visit. What a wonder that motorhome was to a 5-10 year-old; it was magic on wheels. It had a bathroom, a fridge, a bed. Of course, Grandpa was always teasing, tickling, and laughing with us. Every time they visited, Grandpa would pull out the special "cleaning" hose and wash the motorhome. That was a signal for Danny, Julie, and I to don our swimming suits and play "stay away from Grandpa." If we got too close, we would get soaked. I remember the giggles. Grandma would pull out her video recorder, and somewhere there are VHS tapes of the whole event. But I can play the scene in my mind any time.
Julie remembers Grandpa reciting "The Cremation of Sam Magee" and "Paul Revere's Ride" from memory. Maybe that's why they seemed so familiar in junior high English. But what I thought was funny was when Grandpa would Say "Hey pal, glad to see you back from the army, haven't seen you for ears and ears." (He would pat our arm, back, and tug our ears) and it was definitely cool when he found quarters behind our ears.
I remember one time Grandpa getting REALLY mad. Funny, I don't even remember why, except it must have been bad. He was so even tempered!! (As long as we showed respect to Mom and Dad!
I love you Grandpa, and I am excited to see you again. Then, you will be whole!
