Anecdotes

I have always loved that word. I don't think I discovered its meaning until high school, but it is such a funny word. Anecdote sounds like something other than what it is.

First of all, kids just make silly/funny comments all the time. What kills me is some of the questions they ask. I guess all of us ask silly questions from time to time. However, yesterday a student raised his hand and said "my mom wants to know if we have school on Christmas." He's American. Mormon (the same kid who asked if I was Mormon) and has lived in Utah his whole life. I just looked at him thinking "are you kidding me?"

It is my belief that snow talks to kids, especially slightly rebellious boys. For some reason the pull to pick up snow, form a ball, and throw it at someone is completely irresistable. Our principal has announced almost every day that snowballs are against the rules. We remind the students in class. They know the rules. Yet everday, one of my students cannot avoid the tempation to make a solid ball of ice and chuck it across the playground. I don't get it. Snow is cold! Yuck!

In other snow news, last week a student picked up snow and ate it, only to spit it out immediately and exclaim "It's salty" Although it was rude of me, I had to laugh when I told him "The custodian puts salt everywhere you walk in order to melt the ice." Hopefully that will deter students from eating icky snow! (I vaguely remember that temptation, but haven't been afflicted with it for at least 12 years now! ha ha!)

It occurs to me that these stories may not be entertaining to anyone but myself, but at least I have documented bits and pieces of my experience in the professional teaching world!

Man! I wish I was a kid again. I would love to play in the snow..(In fact if we had some here, I would go play in it right now! Sometimes when no one is looking I still eat a little bit...just for old times sake. Ha ha!!

Just so you know... I laughed out loud while reading this, seriously. So there is someone else who enjoys these stories. Oh, and I find that whenever I comment on your blog I am checking and rechecking my grammar since that is what you teach in school (I think). I have come to the conclusion that you'll just have to put up with my mistakes because I'm sick of worrying about it. The same goes for my spelling, I'm a terrible speller. :) Enjoy!
