Almost a week later...

OK, I finally have a minute to blog about Alana's first birthday!

First of all, she was sick, which made it less than fun (and led to Evan calling her a "butthead", which made me very mad, because he thought she wasn't being "fun." Didn't you know the only reason we had her was so she could entertain us night and day? Argh! What am I going to do when I have teenagers?!!)

Moving on...
Feb 14 the Deardens came over for dinner and to celebrate Staci & Alana's birthdays. It was lots of fun.

Feb 15 was a Sunday, and we kept Alana home from church because she was so sick. Poor thing. She was awake a lot of the night, so none of us got much sleep over the weekend.

Feb 16 was President's day (crazy that on this day a year ago I was in the hospital enjoying my newborn!!!) My parents and the kids who still live at home came to visit, and we gave Alana her first cake. As I mentioned before, she wasn't in her usual happy, smile and play with everyone mood. She mostly wanted me to hold her, but she played a little with Grandpa and Grandma, and her new toys.

Thank you everyone for celebrating with us, and for the fun gifts she got.

Stuart and I got her a bubble machine, which she loves (she asks for bubbles all the time, and it was only 3.99, I just need to buy more bubble solution because miracle bubbles don't work with it.) Here are some pictures with Alana & Jake playing bubbles. They are so fun to watch, they play together so well!

I took Alana to her 1 year check up last week, and to my disbelief she only weighed 18.5 pounds. I mean, I know that isn't terrible, but that's exactly what she weighed 4 months ago. So for a day I worried that I had been starving her, or that pregnancy has affected my milk supply, or that there was something wrong. But then I realized she'd been sick and eating hardly anything, my milk is lower than it was, and she started walking 2 months ago and is incredibly active. So I'm not so worried, although I am feeding her fatty things like peanut butter, mac n cheese (made with heart healthy margarine), cheese, yogurt, etc...

I still can't get her to drink cow milk, and she's definitely not ready to wean. I know some moms (my own included) would be like "just wean her, you're the mom, you're in charge." But there are a couple of reasons I won't until she's ready. First, my sanity. She gets so cranky if I try to put off the early afternoon nursing session. Seriously. It's scary. Second, why would I deprive my child of a nutritious, healthy way to eat? Third, why would I deny either of us that chance to cuddle and bond? So there you have it. I think it's good for her, and maybe I'll even end up nursing her while nursing a newborn (which sounds so tiring to me, so we'll have to see if that happens!) Unless my midwife says I need to wean for my unborn child's health, I'll keep going. Sorry if that sounded like a soap box. I just get tired of people telling other people how to parent their children. Sorry if I've ever done that to any of my readers!
Here is one last picture of Alana wearing Stuart's shirt while we were folding laundry. (she is SO entertained by laundry, it's so nice!)

Peter weaned himself, which worked best for both of us. He was fourteen and a half months old at the time. I liked that I followed his lead. Cooper will be one next month and is still nursing, although I can tell that he's winding down. We'll make it to his birthday at least and probably a little bit beyond.

I love the bonding and cuddling aspect of nursing too.

Good job at sticking to your guns! If you want to keep nursing you should! I totally agree with you on your soap box!!!
