I know, the title doesn't sound very adult-like, but that's how I feel!
You know, it seems like the trend in my pregnancies is that at the end, some “crisis” happens that kind of throws my plans out the window, or at least requires adjustment (it’s good to be flexible though, right?!)

Little Girl was still breech at 36 weeks. That kind of freaked us out, because NOBODY will deliver a breech baby without a c-section, and I did not want a c-section. I ended up coming to terms that if cs was the best, safest way to get my baby here, then that would be ok. Then she flipped and all was well.
This time I have tested positive for group b strep. (Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a type of bacteria that is found in the lower intestine of 10 -35 % of all healthy adults and in the vagina and or lower intestine of 10-35% of all healthy, adult women. GBS should not be confused with Group A Strep, which causes strep throat.) Now, this isn’t such a big deal. With out treatment (meaning antibiotics through IV) the chance of my baby getting the bacteria is between 1-2/200 and 1/4444 (depending on which source you look at, isn’t that weird?!). And the chance of long term problems or death for those babies is about 1-2/200. So not a big chance of something bad happening.
But SERIOUSLY!? Menigitis? Sepsis? Things that could lead to cerebral palsy or death?! I don’t want that for my baby. I don't even want her to have to spend time in the NICU! And I want to take her home when we're ready!
But then there are the cons of marinating my baby in antibiotics (which is what the pediatricians want me to do). First off is the destruction of all the good bacteria that babies are born with. Which can cause yeast infections (yuck!) and thrush! Not good. Then there is the chance that a “superbug” could be created because of overuse of antibiotics.
Another possibility is getting yeast infections myself, so I plan on taking a probiotic every day starting now just to build up the good flora. Finally, I have to be hooked up to an IV. I know, most of you are probably thinking “that’s standard procedure” (due to the erroneous belief that laboring women will die without it) but since I’m hoping to have a drug-free birth, I need to be able to move around freely, and being hooked up to wires kind of makes that more difficult.
Plus having a needle in your arm isn’t super comfortable. Makes relaxing kind of hard.
Here is what I read in an article from my Bradley Instructor: “Intravenous Penicillin to all women with a positive GBS culture is routine Obstetrical protocol. This is effective however this commonly results in postpartum yeast infections for mom and baby (including thrush), allergic reaction and possibly anaphylactic shock and contributes to antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. The fall in GBS infections from routine antibiotics has been more than offset by a rise in deadly, penicillin-resistant E. coli infections.”

So I have some decisions to make. Not really whether or not I’ll take the antibiotics, I think I will, but of when to go to the hospital. What if I get their too late for the medicine to kill the bacteria, and my baby gets it anyway? What if my water breaks, but labor doesn’t start right away and I have to have 4 doses?
I love my midwife, by the way. She is so helpful, understands that this isn’t an ideal situation, and is pretty supportive of what I decide. She says the peds want me to have 4 DOSES of antibiotics, but she thinks if I can just get one dose, then get the baby delivered before it’s time for another dose, that would be the ideal situation. Which brings up the question of labor augmentation.
Anyway, any insights or suggestions would be great, unless it’s fringe, unsupported and undocumented “facts” about this subject, which I can do without. Anyone tested positive with a pregnancy before? How did it work out?
Thanks for reading if you made it through!
As a reward, here is a cute pic of Little Girl with her cute Dear cousins!

I went into labor before I got tested for strep b so I was treated as if I had it. I was worried about the thrush and everything, but I read in one of the booklets they gave me about Newmans ointment. It is an antifungal ointment and can help prevent thrush, plus it helps soothe. My doc prescribed it for me and it was fantastic. William and I never had any problems! You should ask your midwife about it.
I was positive for GBS, and had recently talked to a friend (in our ward) whose relative had a baby that died of GBS because the nurses didn't handle it properly. I hadn't researched all the cons of penicillin, but I was very much for the treatment after hearing that. I think I only had two doses, but I'm not sure. I didn't experience and problems with yeast or thrush and Caleb didn't either.
I was really sick the week before I had Mason. The doc gave me antibiotics and I was so upset. I am a firm believer in gut flora and all the good bacteria we have in our bodies. And if a Mom doesn't have good bacteria when the baby is born then they are more prone to get autism (so I read somewhere, sorry about the undocumented info). So I drank lots of Kefir (probiotic stuff) and took Threelac (expensive probiotic stuff my Mom had lying around).
If I had group B I would definatley do the aintibiotics but I would also do lots of probiotics leading up to the birth and afterwards.
Good luck!! It's all about what's best for the baby (and you).
I'm sorry about the GBS. That's no fun. I would get the antibiotics just to be on the safe side. Is there anyway they can just put you on an oral antibiotic? Yeast infections and thrust are not fun to deal with, but it's a lot better than the infection. I'm sure a good Probiotic will help.
I tested positive before I had Brita, so they gave me the antibiotics. I'm pretty sure I had thrush problems afterward. It wasn't so fun. My midwife this time said that it only took about fifteen minutes to give the antibiotic, so it's not like you'd have to be hooked up the whole time. I used the Newman's ointment (it was recommended by an LLL lady and my doctor called in a prescription for it without even seeing me) and it helped quite a bit.
My GBS was found at 9 weeks of pregnancy, because I had SO much of it. I was on antibiotics the whole pregnancy and then I had all four rounds during labor. It was so important to have all four. My sister in-law only had one round in the hospital and her poor baby was in the hospital for a few days because of the infection. Take all of them PLEASE!
http://www.mothering.com/treating-group-b-strep-are-antibiotics-necessary. Hey! My midwife gave me
this today at my appointment. I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this! I'm sure everything will be just fine. Love ya!
First off, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your research. If I'm lucky enough to get a baby #3 I will be so prepared!!
Second, being a GBS carrier, I was treated with both my girls. My doctor told me one dose should be all your baby really needs, but they do two for safety. He said any more than two pads the hospitals pockets. I had two doses (can you believe each dose is 2 hrs to administer) with both my girls and all was great as far as that goes. I hear you on problems at the end of the line, both of my girls got stuck and couldn't drop. Whitney actually got stuck in the birthing canal (she got the whole cord wrapped around her middle) and Breann was turned sideways and stuck on the left wall of my uterus. I'm almost scared to see if I get another one what will happen. Just remember the Lord is on our side. We are carrying out His plan and all will work out. You are in my prayers!
Wont delivered a baby breech vaginally? Hum, I have an upside down heart shaped uterus = higher chance of baby being breech and the midwife said if you can deliver why not, we'll monitor the baby but if things get too stressful.....that means an emergency CS which is not cool but I guess well see. Nicholette turned and hopefully this one will too! I'll pray for you and the baby, that things will happen for the best of health to both of you.
