I'm not crunchy...am I?

I was looking at Tophat's blog the other day and noticed that the link to this blog was listed under her "crunchy" friends. I never thought of myself as crunchy, and, no offense to Heather, but I always thought crunchy moms were weird. Luckily, I'm learning that there are MANY different ways to be a great mom, and I can do what works for me without worrying what others think, and maybe even share ideas. So, if being a natural-birth promoting, nursing, cloth diapering, baby-wearing, eco-friendly mom means that I am cruchy, well then bring it on! (I have to note, I'm not a vegetarian and I don't believe co-sleeping is a good idea, and I'm still iffy on the homebirthing, but totally support the rights of women to do that!)
I went to Jillian's Drawers and ordered the $10 trial... I'm excited, but I had to buy some accesories, such as a waterproof diaper tote and pail. I'm thinking of getting a mini-shower diaper sprayer, but I'll wait to see how it goes with cloth diapers. I am really excited! I figured out a laundry method, I'll just do ALL my laundry at Julie's once a week (once she moves here at the end of the month) and then 2 times a week I'll stick a load of diapers in our coin-op and just air dry. I'm home all day anyway, I might as well have something to do, I really don't think it will take that much extra time. And think of the money I'll save, and the landfills I won't be contributing to. (Plus, did you know about the toxic chemicals manufacturers put in disposables to make them so absorbent? Highly carcinogenic, kind of scary... not that I think it is that huge of a worry, but still...the things you never think about!) :)

I did find a site that explains the difference between all the kinds of cloth diapers, that was helpful. I definitely don't want to use diapers that require an extra cover, that's just too bulky. All in all, it will probably be around $300 to get started with cloth diapers, but we should make up that cost in a few months, especially with a newborn. (although I might just use newborn diapers with her until she fits into the one-size cloth diapers, which is what I think I'll get.)

Anyway, I'm excited to try different kinds of cd's, and we'll see how it goes. And if you think I'm crazy, don't worry. I'm not offended. But you don't have to mention it to me. :)

That is really cool! I tried finding different sites that explained the different diapers, so I'm glad you put a link to one. I mentioned the idea to David and I think he thought I was joking. I am seriously considering this though. I hate spending $40 a month on diapers. When you get your trial pack, can I come over and check them out?

How fun that we are doing this cloth diaper adventure at the same time! And having little girls at the same time too! Fun. I hadn't really thought about what to do about a newborn-- Asher was 10lbs so fast, in less than 2 weeks but I guess a girl might be smaller. I might get a few of the Kissaluvs fitted diapers because they are suppose to be the best for newborns, but I hate to invest too much in newborn diapers that won't last long. I will probably "supplement" with disposables too. In fact, I think we might do 1/2 and 1/2 for awhile. It is a bit too much money for us to buy a whole bunch of diapers right up front, so I will probably buy enough for Asher to have 2-3 cloth diaper days (maybe more) and then slowly buy diapers as we can afford them. I like the idea of the one sized ones though-- so that anyone can wear them.

I agree with you though about the price shock yet when I think about how much we've spent on diapers for Asher I kind of cringe-- at least $500-600 in the garbage (literally) so I don't feel too bad spending money on something I'll use again and again.

Hmmm...interesting. I think that's smart if it's cheaper, but then again, I would be grossed out having to wash diapers...I'll have to see how it goes for you!
