Mastitis round three began Sunday night. I'm still recovering, but I feel a lot better. Mastitis is generally a sign that I need more rest and less stress. (I got it when Seth was 4 weeks and 6 weeks old).
The good news is that I have been treating myself with Essential Oils. Here is what I wrote on facebook last night:
Today I witnessed the power of essential oils. I started coming down with mastitis last night, and by this morning it was a full-blown infection. I felt AWFUL! I looked up some oils to use, and I though I didn't have citris fresh, so I just used lavender and frankincense. I rubbed them on the affected area, took some ibuprofen, and did some other weird things like putting potato slices on my breast (my midwife suggests that). I didn't want to use antibiotics because they are expensive, and I definitely believe that overuse leads to resistent strains of bacteria. By mid-afternoon I was feeling HORRIBLE and my fever spiked to 102.4. I had also tried raw garlic (I just minced it and chased it down with water). I was pumping/nursing like crazy, guzzling liquids, and trying to rest (yeah right, I have four kids!) wink emoticon Then I got on the YolOily facebook group and asked advice. I realized I DO have citris fresh, so I used that topically, with gentle baby. I took Frankincense, oregano, and Thieves (immune support blend) in a capsule every two hours. I feel so much better now! I have a slight headache, but nothing like the full-body ache I had earlier. My fever is down to 99. I'm ready for bed! I have doubted that oils work, but now I know that they do!
A lot of people don't think oils work for them. Unfortunately, oils aren't a "one and done" treatment. You have to consistently apply and reapply them, take them internally, and maybe give yourself an extra day. And you need to rest and let your body recover if you are taking oils for an illness. Mastitis can last up to 10 days. I think I will be completely better by tomorrow or Thursday at the latest.
I'm going to go lay down and snuggle my baby now.
